WiFi Warrior

I’ve mentioned before that I live in Canada. Recently, I’ve had issues with my internet connection (I won’t go into great detail, but suffice to say Bell ignored me for a month), so I found my internet where I could.

So I joined the ranks of the WiFi warrior. Specifically hanging out at coffee shops as much as I could to get my internet fix.

So here’s a list of 5 good things and 5 bad things about getting your internet at the coffee shop:

Good:

  • Lots and lots of coffee: I don’t like being that guy who buys one coffee and sits around for 6 hours, so I do go up for at least a refill every so often. So long as you’re at a good coffee shop, this is not a problem.
  • Good Company: Hang around a coffee shop often enough, and you get to know the other patrons. It’s a good way to meet some really cool people and have great conversations.
  • Good Music: Well, this depends on your tastes and the taste of the baristas, or corporate, depending on the coffee shop, but you can catch some pretty good tunes. Be ready for weird looks if you start dancing to it.
  • Getting Out Of the House: Sometimes it really is good to have an excuse to go out, even if it is just for internet. I’m a real homebody, so this is giving my a social kick in the butt.
  • Pretty Solid Internet: Coffee shops that offer WiFi need to have a robust enough system to handle multiple connections, so it’s usually pretty good. … usually.

Bad:

  • Possible Coffee Overdose: After staying at the coffee shop for 6 hours, and getting another cup o’ Joe every 30 – 45 minutes, the shakes are bound to happen. Whoooooo boy!
  • Distractions: Between the other people, the music, the foot traffic, well, it’s quite easy to get distracted from what you actually meant to work on
  • Hard Seats: Coffee shops make money by making sure that whoever’s there is buying something. Having really comfy seats makes people want to stay well beyond finishing their coffee. Hence, my butt hurts.
  • It’s Fattening: Coffee shops have WAY too many tasty pastries. I admit it, I’m weak.
  • It’s Expensive: At least, it’s expensive if you don’t wanna be a total leech. Constantly buying coffee and pastries is not good for the pocketbook.

And I found out one of the other regulars has never seen Star Wars! I will have to educate someone. ‘Til next time.
